experiments in tea #19: raspberry vanilla (yumchaa)

experiments in tea #19: raspberry vanilla
Mug containing a reddish-brown liquid

Raspberry Vanilla is the tea of choice of an acquaintance of mine from Yumchaa, so I heard good things before trying it. It's another rooibos tea, but it haas added raspberries and vanilla, as well as rose. I love the sound of the first two things, but rose is a hit and miss taste for me, so we'll see.

In the packet, I initially got a massive whiff of the rooibos hay smell and thought 'oh no' before the raspberry and vanilla kicked in and made it all quite pleasant.
Ingredients:Rooibos, dried raspberries, vanilla pods, rose petals.

100 degrees C, one heaped teaspoon (and rooibos is quite small, so quite a lot of tisane there.) I kept it in as I was sweeping up (see lessons learned) so it was probably in there for about 6 or 7 minutes.

In the cup, it smells mostly like the earthy smell of the rooibos, with hints of raspberry and vanilla.

Hot Brew
Verdict: Same as the smell notes, really. Mostly rooibos taste, though not as intense as a pure rooibos, Slight hints of the raspberry and vanilla at the end of a sip - the vanilla more than the raspberry, although that might be because I'm so accustomed to raspberry that I'm just accepting it as a regular taste.

Second cup: more balanced. Not very full, but the raspberry, rooibos and vanilla came out in equal measure,

I will say, the day I first drank this was a stressful as heck day, and it did do at least a little bit of the way to calming me down. Just a little.

Lessons Learned: Situational: If one is going to put the packet upside-down in the band of one's shorts to carry it upstairs because one has no pockets, make sure the packet is sealed properly or much of the tisane will end up on the floor and need to be swept up. Probably wasted about a cup or two's worth, which is a shame, because this is a nice tisane.

Would I drink it again? Yup, sure! I'll try a few more brews to see if the flavours get any stronger, but otherwise it's not half bad.
