scientistsinistral: Classic Yellow TV With Blank Screen (watching)

This was the week I got a bit bored with the films, and started watching more television series instead. Which isn't a bad thing! It's nice to switch things up.

Yuri!! on Ice (Anime)
Ah, the m/m figure skaters that took Tumblr by storm in 2016. I watched it whilst it was originally airing and really liked it, and now that I'm doing fic writing challenges I wanted to review the canon. Luckily, it's only 12 eps. I also went back and forth on sub and dub - mostly sub, but sometimes dub if I wanted to see how the dub did a certain scene - some of the accents in the sub aren't quite my thing, especially Yuuri's (who Japanese) American accent, which makes sense given dubbing but also the voice wasn't my favourite, and some of the other international accents were also a bit jarring - accurate, but detracted from the story. However, I did really like the Russian accents on Yuri Plisetsky and Victor Nikiforov, and most of the scenes I watched in the dub was for those two.

Overall, it was just as cute as the first time - a story of a lacklustre figure skater getting the five-time world champion as his coach, and his journeys through skating and self-confidence and also falling in love with said coach before they'd even realised what was happening. The pandemic meant there's been no more content aside from a special episode which I still need to watch, but what is out there is *chef's kiss*, so I'm not complaining. Expect fic for this in future!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (Anime, 2009) - e1-3
Another rewatch for canon review purposes (I'm trying not to consume too many new things, because the list of fandoms I want to write for keeps growing far beyond the scope of how much I actually write for said new fandoms)! The first time I watched it I was also in about 2016, so it's been a while. I watched the dub that time, so I'm trying the sub this time, and whilst I do think I prefer most of the voices in the dub (the low male voices tend to be a bit gravelly for my liking, and low female voices in the dub are higher here which is less true to the character, imo), I do prefer the Elric brothers' voices in the sub. Which is good, because they're the leads.

Only watched the first three eps of a 64-ep series, so very at the beginning, but very much enjoying going back to the world where I'd mostly forgotten what happens in canon. However, there are characters appearing here that have fates down the road, and I'm just watching and being sad because I have the curse of foresight this time. There's one that hasn't appeared yet, but there's one character that's going to make me so sad as soon as she appears.

(No, I have not watched the 2003 version, and I never will.)

I Medici | Medici: Masters of Florence - s1e6-8
Finished up the first season! Lots happened, the atmosphere and clothing were still top tier, but most of the characters were very much 'it's complicated and I don't really like you anymore' by the end, especially when cheating on lovers happened by... oh, just about everyone in the series. Even my babes Piero & Lucrezia had a moment where they were tipping on the edge of dislike, mostly because they were having a bit of discord and I don't like discordance, but by the end they were the only ones I'd probably want to write fic for, aha. I'm looking forward to seeing them as parents to grown up sons in the second season, though - and I'm glad they ended up this season happy.

Probably going to take me a week or two before moving onto the next season - there's a time jump and I think I want the time to reset, especially because I'm more interested in S2 but also know there's going to be more politics and extramarital affairs and I can already feel myself rolling my eyes.

Pinocchio (1940)
I did watch one film! The next full length animated film in my 'watch all of Disney' quest. This one was definitely more interesting than Snow White, in that there was more of a focus on action and growing up from the young Pinocchio.

I did find myself getting a bit annoyed that things were constantly in uneasy territory for Pinocchio. Which is the whole point of the film really, how easy naive new lives can be led to temptation, but just the number of things and people trying to take advantage of Pinocchio meant I could never have a calm and joyful moment, which wasn't my type of viewing experience. This is partly a me problem - I understand that stories have to have conflict to be stories, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. (This also explains why most of my fics are slice of life moments with characters being soft or conversing with one another. I don't like conflict, y'all.)

Also, Jiminy Cricket kept checking out EVERY woman in the darn film, including the fish and the wooden puppets, and at the end it got a bit eye-rolly.
